red-cross-taste-09-of-andy-8x11ANDALUSIA, Ala.  - Tickets are on sale now for the annual eating extravaganza that is the “Taste of Covington County,” benefitting the Covington County Chapter of the American Red Cross. This year’s event is scheduled for Monday, April 20 from 6 to 9:30 p.m. at the Kiwanis Community Center in Andalusia.

”We’re refocusing our efforts on the food,” says Jeffery Biggs, executive director of the Covington County Chapter. “That’s what the event began as, and we’re making sure this year’s event is all about the food once more. At the same time, we hope to raise $10,000 for our chapter’s local operations and disaster operations.”

Focusing on the food, according to Biggs, means the chapter is courting all food-related industries in Covington County.

”We want every restaurant, caterer, food wholesaler to the public, appliance center – anything that has to do with food involved in this year’s event,” Biggs said. “We have some great new restaurants in the area, and we have some really exceptional caterers and bakers. We want them to get involved with this year’s event.  What better place and time to promote your business than with a captive audience with a stomach ready to sample.

”Last year’s event was a tremendous success, and most of our guests told us they couldn’t have imagined a better family-oriented event,” he continued, “so we’re aggressively seeking additional restaurants and food-related industries to participate.”

There is no cost for restaurants or other food vendors to participate – and in fact, they receive a donation receipt that can be used for tax purposes.

”The food vendors donate the food to sample, and in return, we issue them a tax-receipt so they can receive credit for their expenses,” Biggs said. “It’s a win-win for them. They get to promote their business and receive the credit for donating to a charity.”

Tickets for this year’s event to public are holding steady – only $10 each, or a family pack of four tickets for $35. More than 10 tickets purchased at one time are only $8.00 each. Tickets are on sale now!

”We thought it was important to keep the ticket prices the same so we could continue to make the night an affordable event for families and large groups,” Biggs said. “This is a great opportunity for families, church groups, and other civic groups to have a fun evening out together for a good price – and a great cause.”

ANDALUSIA, Ala. - A recent surge in house fires locally is prompting the Covington County Chapter of the American Red Cross to issue an appeal for financial donations in order to continue service to the people of Covington and Conecuh Counties.

“We have responded to three house fires in the past week,” said Jeffery Biggs, executive director of the Covington County Chapter. “Those fires are putting a strain on the chapter, and we are urgently requesting donations in order to maintain the levels of service to those affected by these terrible disasters.”

When a family contacts the Red Cross after being affected by a house fire, the local chapter helps by providing for the immediate humanitarian needs of the family, Biggs said.

“Sometimes the help a family receives from the Red Cross is the only help they get,” Biggs said. “The assistance provided by the local chapter helps meet those basic needs. It can make all the difference in the world to a family that has just lost all of their possessions and family mementos.”

The Covington County Red Cross is located in the Covington County Administration Building in Andalusia, or donations can be mailed to 234 Hillcrest Drive, Andalusia, AL 36420.
